Gum disease develops when bacteria gather along the gum line, often beneath a layer of hardened plaque called tartar. Protected by the tartar “shell,” the bacteria are free to multiply, releasing toxic substances that cause gum tissue to pull away form the tooth surface, creating small pockets where more bacteria can invade. This process continues until finally the bacteria reach the root area of the tooth, causing roots to become loose and eventually resulting in the loss of the tooth.
Gum disease typically follows a specific course, beginning with the mildest form of disease called gingivitis. During this phase, there may be very few symptoms and the only way you'll know you have gum disease is with a routine cleaning. As the disease progresses, your gums may bleed, especially when you're brushing or flossing, and they may also become tender, red and swollen. Your teeth may also become sore, especially as the disease progresses to periodontitis, the most advanced form of disease. At this point, gums have receded significantly and tooth roots have become affected. Your teeth may be loose and tooth loss may also occur.
Mild gum disease may be treated with more frequent routine cleanings to get the bacteria under control. But when the disease advances to moderate or advanced stages, special cleaning techniques called root planing and scaling are needed to remove bacteria and tartar below the gum line and from around the roots.
